The Siberian Forest Cat is a natural breed that has been present in Russia for centuries. They are a slow-maturing larger sized domestic breed that reaches their full magnificence at about 5 years of age with males being a bit larger than females.
The Neva Masquerade cat is a pointed variety of the Siberian cat, meaning it has "points" of color on the face and paws. These are gorgeous, large and impressive cats with full, fluffy coats and brilliant blue eyes.
Eitherway, both are now condsidered to be part of the Siberian breed. They are intelligent, with power and agility, having strong hindquarters, and able to jump exceptionally high. They can leap great distances and heights, but despite their size, they are adept at negotiating obstacles in their path without knocking them over. At the same time, they love to play and will entertain you with their clown-like antics. They adore their human families with children holding a warm spot in their hearts. Some have even described them as being "dog like" with their personalities, coming when called, waiting for you at the door and being loyal to their "selected" person. They have a wonderful depth to their purr and talk to you with a chirping sound, particularly when they are coming to greet you when you have been out
While considered a semi-longhair, the Siberian/Neva coat varies with the season. In the winter, it will have a thick, rich, full, triple coat that would have protected it from the elements in its native Russia. In the summer, they shed the heavy winter coat for a shorter, less dense coat. The fur is textured but glossy which helps reduce matting, a twice weekly combing with attention being paid to the neck and other areas that is hard for the cat to reach is enough to keep it in good condition. The Nevas are pointed with blue eyes, the more traditional Siberian has a wide variety of colors and patterns, with deep intense colors and rich patterns that make them a dramatic stand out from the everyday cat.
In regards to allergies, we won't sell a kitten as being non-allergenic. It is due to the nature of allergies and Siberians/Nevas that they can be hypoallergenic. That does not mean they are non-allergenic, "hypo" means less and it's because they produce less of the proteins that cause reactions that they can potentially be tolerated. Altering and regular bathing of the kitten as well as regular allergy protocol, i.e. dusting, cleaning, vacuuming etc. can also be helpful. Even if you find you can tolerate a Siberian/Neva, as much as you may love your new kitten, not allowing him/her to sleep with you may also help. If allergies are an issue, it does not mean that your tolerance levels will be able to handle a Siberian/Neva, testing is always advised. Mindset can play a factor as well. The more determined a person with allergies is to have a cat, the more successful they will be, Siberians can be tolerable to most people but not everyone.
